MUSICIANS IN ISOLATION: PSEUDO ECHO’S BRIAN CANHAM

Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips chats with Pseudo Echo’s Brian Canham to reminisce about the band’s past, discuss the fabulous new album After Party and the gear he used to create it.

Our After Party afterthoughts …

Brian Canham and his band project Pseudo Echo have always made a quality brand of synth pop but with the release of the new album After Party, the talented singer, songwriter and producer has created the surprise packet of 2020.

Blending eclectic synth pop sounds with catchy disco beats and ambient chill vibes, After Party is as hypnotic as it is danceable. The accumulation of decades of recording knowledge and an acute understanding of sounds and arrangements have combined to produce this accomplished package of music.

From the mystical, middle eastern flavoured feel of the the opening instrumental Morning in Amman to the Funky-Townesque tempo of Wedge-Tail and the contemplative spirit of Laguna, there’s a daring in this work that may not have come to fruition had the covid lockdown not given Canham the time and space to create so fearlessly. The chill remix of the Pseudo Echo hit Love An Adventure is worth the admission ticket alone and the track Quasar is simply a hit waiting to happen.

After Party is an impressive achievement, and although leaning on a palette of retro sounds, feels as relevant as anything else out there today. Quite possibly Canham’s finest work to date.
